University of California, Los Angeles alumnus Kirk Lee wrote an online article for Waterski magazine highlighting some of the common struggles for a new collegiate team. Check out the full article on their website.
Kirk is the current vice chairperson of the Western Region and attends collegiate events as a board member, alumnus, safety, and official. Outside the NCWSA Kirk is still active in 3-event skiing, and may also be seen skiing the WaterWorld show at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Nobody ever looks back on college and remembers the weekends they got plenty of sleep, and a college water-ski tournament is certainly not one of those weekends — though they still might have trouble remembering some parts. Collegiate water skiing centers on feelings of fraternization and friendly competition, which makes it approachable to newcomers. But forming a team still isn’t easy. Motivated captains must overcome school bureaucracies, shaky membership and equipment problems before they can establish a collegiate water-ski team at their school.
