Team USA took to the trick course today at the World University Championships in Akita, Japan with two skiers in the men’s trick finals, Dylan Schaffer and Sam Greenwood. The top Team USA contender was Dylan Schaffer who is also the current NCWSA men’s trick record holder. Dylan started his NCWSA skiing career at the University of Alabama and transferred to finish his NCWSA skiing eligibility with the Ragin’ Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Sam currently skis for the University of Alabama. In the preliminary round, Dylan and Sam earned trips to the finals with 7620 (4th place) and 6050 (6th place) respectively. To earn medals in the finals each would have to step up his trick run score in an attempt to edge out the top three preliminary trick skiers.
Ultimately the podium could not fit both Team USA skiers. Dylan with a score of 8460 in the finals despite falling early on his hand pass, but was edged out by gold medal recipient Joshua Briant from Rollins College who is skiing for Australia with a score of 11740 and former University of Louisiana Monroe skier Martin Kolman who is skiing for the Czech Republic. Sam ended the finals of men’s trick in 5th place, but set a personal best in the trick event when skiing the men’s final.
Great work by both Dylan and Sam in this finals round, and congratulations to all the medal winners!
