In our Fall season the Florida Southern College vs Rollins College tournament was canceled due to a hurricane, but the teams are happy to break the off season and kick off our 2018 Spring season!
Florida Southern College hosted a two team showdown between itself and Rollins College at Jack Travers’ Sunset Lakes. This tournament was less about team competition and more about some elite skiers kicking off the dust and getting ready for their 2018 seasons, but this is collegiate skiing so whether you are preparing for a pro tourney or not your team is there to help share the love and cheer you on! Here are the results of the two team tournament that features some of the best skiers in the NCWSA!
Men’s Slalom
Some great skiing as the men from Florida Southern took the top three spots and were slaying buoys in 39.5′ off. Zane Nicholson took first with 3 at 39.5′ off! Tanguy Dailland and Cole McCormick were close behind tying for second with 2 at 39.5′ off. Pictured is Rollins College’s Dorien Llewellyn surprised by the rope breaking during his slalom pass.
Women’s Slalom
Women’s slalom was lead by Florida Southern skier Samantha Dumala with 2 at 39.5′ off, just a buoy shy of her NCWSA women’s slalom record! In second was Rollins College’s Erika Lang with 3.5 at 35′ off, and in a three way tie for third between Kelley Breeden (FSC), Valentina Gonzalez (FSC), and Jenna Morgan (ROL) with 3 buoys at 35′ off.
Women’s Trick
With the preparation for pro tournaments of 2018 underway, trick skiers in those tournaments get two passes where as trick is a single pass in college. This often leads trick skiers picking a pass and doing that one pass of their two to prepare for a pro event when skiing in a single pass collegiate tournament. Rollins College’s elite trick skiers were separated by 40 points at the top of the leaderboard, Natalia Cuglievan of Rollins College eclipsed her teammate Erika Lang by scoring 5,300 points to Erika’s 5,260! Valentina Gonzalez from Florida Southern rounded out the top three with a trick score of 3,300.
Men’s Trick
In men’s trick Dorien Llewellyn, who will be heading to Australia shortly to compete as a pro, took the trick event crown with a single pass of 5,660 points! Dorien was followed by Cole McCormick and Tanguy Dailland in second and third respectively.
Women’s Jump
After getting third in trick Valentina was ready to fly, and she soared her way to first place in women’s jump with a leap of 133 feet. Valentina was followed by Florida Southern teammate Nicola Horwood who jumped 113 feet, and Rollins College’s Emma Morgan – 105 feet.
Men’s Jump
When it came time for the men to take on big red, Florida Southern took the top three spots with David Fulp (155 feet), Kevin Spicer (121 feet), and Cole McCormick (107 feet).
Overall & Combined
The overall skier champions were two FSC skiers, Cole McCormick and Valentina Gonzalez. Florida Southern put up some great numbers as they got the “rust” off, and topped Rollins College in the team combined as they also sent off some of their seniors it what may be their last tournament!
