Clemson University Claims Victory at CU Ski Spring Splash

Clemson hosted their annual Spring Tournament on the weekend of April 14th-15th, although this time at a new lake – Hans Menzel’s Lake Flumi, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new site had a great start with the weather, as the weekend was sunny and in the 70’s. And you know what good weather means – good skiing! The tournament featured the usual Clemson, Alabama, Auburn squads, as well as Lander University and Georgia Tech skiers.

Despite the conference having had only one tournament beforehand, there were several solid performances from various skiers, boosting scores and rankings for the All-Stars Tournament. University of Alabama skier Quinn Haines put on a solid performance in all three events, jump 174 feet (1st place), tricking 4,220 points (1st place), and putting up a score of 2 buoys at 35′ off for a score of 98 buoys (3rd place) collectively earning Quinn first place in men’s overall. On the women’s side University of Alabama skier Katie Horton and Clemson University skier Nellie Roberts battled it out in each event for first place. Nellie took first in slalom with Katie taking second, and Katie grabbed first in trick and jump with Nellie taking second. Topping Nellie twice placed Katie in the lead for overall to grab first place in women’s overall.

We had a lot of fun at the tournament, and when the skiing was finished, the combined team results were:

  1. Clemson University
  2. University of Alabama
  3. Auburn University
  4. Lander University

On behalf of Clemson University, we would like to send out a big thank you to the Menzel family for allowing us to host and camp on site as well as all of our officials that enabled the tournament to run smoothly and quickly: Dean Collins, Bob Archambeau, Chris Logan, the Bryans Family, the Stevens Family, Matt Page, Austin & Jeff Rodgers, Alabama skier Sam Greenwood and Clemson Alumnus Paul Kulig.

This tournament wrapped up the South Atlantic Conference Spring Season, leaving only All-Stars to look forward to until the fall. As our seniors begin to make their way across the graduation stages to receive their diplomas and (sadly) move on from the collegiate skiing world, we hope they will return and continue to make an impact within our teams and region. As a farewell to them, we think we finally have an answer to their frequently asked question of “Is Everybody Happy?!”: You bet we are!
