Jeff Clark’s Legacy

Jeff Clark began his water skiing career at just 14 years old with the Lakeland Ski Club in Florida. What he did not know then was that he would become a driving force behind the “golden age” of water skiing and play a pivotal role in the establishment of the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA).

Clark first became involved in the sport as both an athlete and a tournament official, participating in countless competitions across his home state of Florida. During the 1970s, however, his focus expanded beyond the water when he joined a small group of dedicated individuals working to build a system of intercollegiate water ski tournaments. He was instrumental in developing this new league and witnessed its early success firsthand when he served as Chief Judge at the inaugural NCWSA National Championships in 1979.

In the decades that followed, Clark remained deeply committed to collegiate water skiing. Whether serving as a tournament official, helping establish new collegiate teams, or organizing regional leagues, he played an essential role in shaping the thriving organization that the NCWSA has become today.

When asked about his favorite memory in the sport, Clark explained that no single moment stands above the rest. Instead, what he treasures most is the impact the NCWSA has had on generations of student-athletes. He has watched national champions reach their full potential while also seeing beginners discover confidence and make meaningful contributions to their teams. For Clark, the greatest reward has always been witnessing students challenge themselves, persevere through adversity, and grow both on and off the water. Equally memorable is the unique culture of collegiate water skiing, where teammates enthusiastically support one another from sunrise to sunset, creating a spirit of camaraderie that defines the sport.

After a long and distinguished career that included judging and driving local, regional, and national tournaments until the early 1980s and his induction into the NCWSA Hall of Fame in 2021, Clark has stepped back from many of his leadership responsibilities. Still, he has never strayed far from the water. Today, you can often find him in his home state of Florida serving as an official at AWSA three-event and show skiing tournaments, continuing to give back to the sport that he helped shape for generations of collegiate skiers.
