In 2004 Dr. Bobby King was granted the honorary title of Honorary National Director for life. Outside of water skiing, he graduated from Florida State University, served in the military, and settled down in Pensacola, Florida. Inside the water skiing community, however, his impact was extraordinary. He helped shape the sport and positively influenced countless lives.
On paper, Dr. King’s contributions were extensive. As a three event senior judge and safety director he dutifully served the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA) with distinction. Serving as both the Vice Chairman and Chairman of the NCWSA throughout the 1990s. He also served as Chief Safety for over 5 NCWSA National Championships in the 1980s through 1990s, in addition to countless NCWSA regional tournaments. Most impressively, however, is that he wrote the safety manual for USA-WSWS, establishing guidelines that helped ensure the safety of athletes, spectators, and volunteer safety for everyone at water ski events.
Yet, his influence extended far beyond what could be captured on paper. In particular, the students he worked with at Florida State University consistently spoke of his generous heart and unwavering support. Florida State University Ski Team members recall how Dr. King, DK they would call him for short, would drive from his home in Pensacola to pick up the team in a 15 passenger van, with a trailer of gear in tow, and drive them to a multitude of tournaments during the fall ski season, with a stop at Cracker Barrel on the way of course. Some teammates say these drives were some of their favorite memories from the team. A former team member Ranie Field reflects that “DK was there for us more than just safety. He was a part of our daily lives for the better.”
The love Dr. King had for the sport will continue to live on through his many contributions and through the countless people whose lives he touched. His legacy remains a lasting example of service, leadership, and dedication to the water-skiing community.
