At the NCWSA All-Stars tournament this past weekend at Borderline Lake in Blaine, Washington the four NCWSA regions came together to compete for the NCWSA All-Star Championship title. Unlike other NCWSA tournaments where skiers compete for their individual Universities, at NCWSA All-Stars each of the four regions combines all of its teams to field a team of ten men and ten women, then the regions square off to compete for the All-Star tournament crown.
This year, Team Midwest (the Midwestern Region) was the two time defending All-Stars Champion; the Midwest won when it hosted the 2015 All-Stars at PITS in Decatur, Illinois and took first when the Eastern Region hosted the 2014 All-Stars in Palm Bay, Florida. This win streak was an odd occurrence because until recently the hosting region was most often also the winner at All-Stars. The winning streak that Team Midwest is on demonstrates the strength of the region as well as how well the region travels to events outside the Midwestern Region. The 2016 tournament was hosted in the Western Region by Western Washington University at Borderline Lake in Blaine, Washington. Attempting to break the Team Midwest winning streak, the Western region pushed the Midwest hard, and after Saturday’s four events the Midwest was in first, but it only had a small lead with the jump event remaining on Sunday. After many leaps off the red wedge, Team Midwest pulled out the victory for a third consecutive All-Stars Championship.
Congrats to Team Midwest for pulling off a 3-peat of All-Stars Championships! Thank you to all the skiers that participated, Western Washington University for being outstanding collegiate hosts, and the Goodmans for hosting a great event at Borderline, Lake.
