The Western Region opened its season with a tournament at Chico State.
UC Davis had a dominant showing with all but 2 of their team qualifying scores in the top 10, with their team captains Tyler Schandra, and Tara Puccioni leading the way with a first place overall finish, and PB’s to start the season.
Chico St., the hosting school, also had a strong showing with a 2nd place team finish. Freshman, Samantha Miller, led the way with a tie for 1st in Slalom, and a 2nd place overall finish.
The Western Region also welcomed it’s first new team in 6 years. Cory Johnson over last spring and summer put together a full team at Sierra Nevada College, in the Reno, NV area, and brought them in force. With a 5th place finish, they are not out of the conversation when it comes to who will qualify for Nationals next weekend.
UCLA will host the Western Regional Championships next weekend, where ASU will look to improve its 3rd place finish to continue its 15 year dominance of the region. SDSU, last year’s hosts, are also looking to qualify with the addition of their freshmen recruits.
