Half of the Great Plains Conference reunited in Evansdale, Iowa for the first fall tournament! It was a fun first tournament with smiles, sunshine, and scattered showers.
Saturday started with A slalom. The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse’s star senior Hunter Duffy took first in slalom with 2 buoys at 35 off. The other two-thirds of the self-proclaimed ‘Goon Squad’ followed closely behind. Iowa State’s Ryan Schipper took second with half a buoy at 35 off and UW – La Crosse’s Evan Marcus took third with 4 buoys at 22 off. The women took to the water shortly after. Iowa State freshman Amanda Luttschwager took first with 2 buoys at 32 off. Second and third place was taken by Samantha Granec and Kendall Anderson of UW – La Crosse, both getting into 30mph 15 off.
Next was A jump. Ryan Schipper jumped into first with 121 feet, Hunter Duffy followed closely behind with 111, and Evan Marcus took third with 103. Amanda Luttschwager flew into first for the women with 62 feet, followed by University of Iowa’s Hope Lamonica with 55 feet, and UW – La Crosse’s Laura Anderson took third with 48 feet. It is great to see jump scores like this so early in the season!
Sunday started off with a little rain, but you know a little rain never scared away Midwest skiers! Sunday’s events consisted of fifth-round Women’s A jump, A trick, and all B events. We loved having a lot of B skiers!
Kicking off Sunday was the final round of Women’s A jump. Next, the teams slid right into the Sunday morning scaries with A trick. Hunter Duffy spun into first with 1,070 points, followed by University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point’s Parker Witt with 970, and University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Reid Miller with 880. Amanda Luttschwager took first again with 1140 points, securing herself the first place spot in women’s overall. Samantha Granec took second with 770 points and following closely behind was fellow UW – La Crosse Skigle Grace Kelly with 730 points. Looks like a lot of people were getting tricky over the summer!
Hunter Duffy took first place for men’s overall and Amanda Luttschwager took first place for women’s overall. UW-La Crosse soared into first with 6,465 points, Iowa State University took second with 5,160 points, and UW – Madison secured third place with 4,465 points. This was quite the spread of points just between third and first for the first tournament of the year!
Overall, Hawkeye was a fun first tournament to kick off the fall season for these enthusiastic Midwest skiers! I personally can’t wait to see what the season has in store for all these Midwest teams with so many skiers skiing so well at the first tournament. Big thanks to the Waterhawks, Iowa State University, all judges, officials, drivers, helpers, and teams for making this tournament happen!
Ski ya next weekend!
