The South Central teams met at Aquaplex, TX for Regionals hosted by Texas State this past weekend. The pressure was on for each team to make Nationals and better their rankings.
Saturday morning kicked off bright and early at 8 am with Women’s Slalom and Men’s Trick. Skiers were out in full force showing their spirit and getting ready for the real show in a week.
On the slalom lake, the ladies were ripping it up with great scores and personal bests. The Cajuns took the top 4 spots in Women’s Slalom with a Warhawk rounding out the top 5. The Bull was out and ready to charge in the morning. Jaimee Bull (ULL) won the slalom event by setting a pending Collegiate National Record of 3.5@39off.
Simultaneously, the Men’s trick event was happening with the boys throwing it down. The Warhawks split the Cajuns in the top 5. The French phenom, Guillaume Tétreault (ULL) tied his personal best that he set at All-Stars to take the win.
In the Women’s Trick event the Warhawks dominated with 3 skiers in the top 5. The Cajuns still stole 1st place with Alice Bagnoli (ULL) pushing out 2nd place, Luiza Charnyshova (ULM) by 40 points. A mere side slide would have made a tie for the top spot.
On the other lake, the Men were battling it out in the slalom course. The wind was starting to pick up a little bit, making the men think tactically on the dock. The Cajuns had a strong showing in slalom with 4 men in the top 5, they were no match for ULM skier, Brandon Schipper who brought home the gold.
The early rotations of women’s jump had difficult conditions but Lafayette skier Marie-Lou Moulanier edged out two Warhawks Luiza Charnyshova and Katerina Svecova for the top 3 of the day. As the winds progressed the final rotation was delayed until Sunday morning at 7:30 am.
The banquet was held on-site where Texas barbeque was served to hungry skiers. The evening rounded out with a regional picture and well wishes to regional superstar officials, Lisa and Kelvin Kelm.
Sunday morning rolled around quick with women’s rotation 5 on the dock. Dominique Allard showing no fear of flight at the early hours posted a jump of 136ft to take the win. Marylou Major (ULL) bore the early morning and rounded out the top 5 with a 123ft leap.
Men’s jump followed the women with Luca Rauchenwald being the first rotation posting a sizeable jump of 169ft. As the morning progressed, stronger tailwinds caused dismay amongst the remaining 4 rotations of jump. The Cajuns showing no remorse with an excellent display of tailwind jumping by taking all 5 spots in the event. The wind didn’t seem to faze some of the Texas jumpers, multiple skiers, men, and women, soaring to personal bests!
This rounded out the A team event solidifying the Cajuns at the top with ULM, TAMU, UT, and TXST all qualifying for nationals as well.
A successful weekend for everyone with over 19 PB’s set along with a record and 5 SCR schools making it to Nationals! Thank you to Texas State University, Aquaplex Homeowners, along with all of the officials and volunteers! We look forward to seeing everyone in California.
