Erin Slater attended the University of Cincinnati (Facebook | Instagram) and graduated in 2014. Collegiate skiing was a big part of Erin’s college career – she even met her fiancé through the NCWSA!
Favorite Event: Trick
Are you still skiing? Yes
Describe your collegiate ski team experience. I was a recreational skier growing up, so the entire competitive water ski world was new to me. I fell in love with trick skiing immediately, and later added on jump and slalom. I lucked into a great team at UC with a mix of all levels of skiing. I went to my first two ski tournaments before I even moved into my dorm freshman year, so the ski team instantly became my family at college. I loved the challenge of competitive skiing, and the friendships I made in the process were the glue that held it all together.
What are you doing now? I work as a registered nurse at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. I ski at a club on the west side of Cincinnati and serve as the Membership Chair for the NCWSA. I’m also getting married in October. My fiancé and I met through collegiate water skiing!
What is your favorite ski team memory? Hard to say! All of our road trips were so fun. I think the trips to Regionals were the best. It was always amazing to see how the team would come together and pull out several personal bests to try to qualify for Nationals each year.
Do you have any advice for current collegiate skiers? Get on the water as much as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts. It goes by quick!
How can we get more college kids involved in the sport? I think bringing students that are interested out to tournaments is a great opportunity. It can be a pretty big challenge to learn the sport starting out, especially if they do not have a lot of experience skiing. Just coming to the tournaments allows them the opportunity to get to know some people and see how fun it is first, without the pressure of competing on top of it!
