2016 Team Trials

How To Enter Team Trials

• A skier will need to declare his / her intent to be considered for selection to the US World University Team in email to NCWSA Chairman Jeff Surdej and register online through USA Water Ski.
• Email Jeff Surdej at j_surdej@yahoo.com with your name and the events you are entering.
• Register online via USA Waterski.
• Registration Deadline: April 30, 2016
• Projected registration fee for Team Trials skier will be $80 and include a dinner Friday night and Saturday night.

Team Description

A six member team will be selected to compete at the 2016 University World Championship September 6-11, in Akita, Japan.

Eligibility

General Eligibility Requirements

• U.S. citizen
• Member of or former member of  an NCWSA team and a current member of USA Water Ski in good standing and be at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event; for 2016, athletes must be born between the 01/01/1988 and the 12/31/1998.
• Students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the NCWSA.
• Former students of the institutions mentioned in the above who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in 2015.
• An incoming freshman for the Fall 2016 semester will also be eligible provided they have joined their University’s water ski team or initiated the process to form a team on their campus.
• A skier will need to declare his / her intent to be considered for selection to the US World University Team in email to NCWSA Chairman Jeff Surdej (j_surdej@yahoo.com) by April 30, 2016.

Score Requirements

Men’s 3 Event – Slalom, Trick, and Jump

• 5 @ 12m, 6200 points, and 155 feet

Women’s 3 Event – Slalom, Trick, and Jump

• 5 @ 13m, 4500 points, and 110 feet

Men’s 1 Event

• Slalom: 1 @ 10.75m
• Trick: 7,200 points
• Jump: 183 feet

Women’s 1 Event

• Slalom: 6 @ 13m
• Trick: 5,000 points
• Jump: 123 feet

Multiple Event Qualifications

A skier qualified in two events may ski in the third event. A skier qualified in only one event may ski only in that event.

Jump Restrictions

• Women shall use the 5′ ramp unless they can show a certified result of a jump of 132 feet on a 5.5′ ramp at a record tournament (Class E, L or R) in which case they may opt to jump on a 1.65m (5.5′) ramp.
• Men shall use the 1.65m (5.5′) ramp unless they can show a certified result of a jump of 177′ on a 1.65m ramp at a record tournament (Class E, L or R) in which case they may opt to jump on a 6′ ramp.

Team Selection Procedures for the FISU University World Championships

• The team will be selected following team trials based on performances at:
  • (a) The two-round collegiate team trials
  • (b) The most recent IWSF rankings list or the average of your top 2 Class “E, L or R” tournaments starting with 1/1/15 and ending the weekend before team trials inclusive, whichever is higher.

• Gender distribution shall be 4/2 or 3/3.
• Team selection score in each event shall be the sum of 50% of the top score and 50% of the average score from the 3 rounds as defined in (a) and (b) below.
  • Top score: defined as the best score from (a) the 2-round team trials or (b) as stated above
  • Average score: defined as the average of the scores from all 3 round
  • Team selection score = (Top score + Average score )/2

• Scoring shall be based on the 1,000-point system where, for each round, 1,000 points will be the highest base score of the skiers in each event. Base scores will stay the same throughout the tournament and will be determined according to (b) in the selection procedure above.
  • Men’s Tricks: (Skier’s score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
  • Women’s Tricks: (Skier’s score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
  • Men’s Slalom*: (Skier’s score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
  • Women’s Slalom*: (Skier’s score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
  • Men’s Jump: (Skier’s score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
  • Women’s Jump: (Skier’s score 1000) / (base score of top seed)

• The top man and woman skiers based on “overall score” will be selected first. “Overall score” is computed as the sum of all three “event scores”.
• The next skier will be the man or women with the next highest “overall score”.
• The 4th, 5th, and 6th skiers will be selected on the basis of “two event scores”, provided that there be no more than four skiers of any one sex. “Two event scores” is defined as the sum of the two highest “event scores” for a skier.
• The skier with the highest “event score” in a single event, not already on the team, will be substituted for the 6th position (or 5th if substitution for the 6th would result in more than four skiers of one sex) provided that such a substitution would increase the team score as described in the selection procedures.
• The selection committee shall designate up to 4 alternates to the US team. The method of selecting these alternates will be at the discretion of the selection committee and not based on any fixed formula. Selected alternates will be given the opportunity of traveling with the team. However, it must be at their own expense unless they are called upon to compete, in which case they will be reimbursed for expenses beginning at the time they are officially called up.

Disclaimer

In the event of unforeseen circumstances which, in the opinion of the selection committee, render these procedures clearly ineffective, the committee may amend these procedures as necessary to accomplish the goals of NCWSA with 2/3rds affirmative vote of the full committee.

Name

The U.S. team selection for 2016 University Worlds and the alternates shall be designated as “Team University USA”. This shall be the US University Team until the next team trials.
